Max Anderson, DDS, MS, MEd
President, CEO and Chairman of the Board
Dr. Anderson is a licensed dentist and dental researcher whose current responsibilities include dental consulting to the insurance industry. Previously, he was Vice President and Chief Science Officer at Washington Dental Service (WDS) for ten years where his responsibilities included professional adjudication; professional relations; a capitation program; and health care data analysis divisions. WDS, a member of the Delta Dental Plans Association, has annual revenues of $750 million and provides dental insurance services to over 2 million people in Washington State. Dr. Anderson provided WDS with both short and long-range planning for the dental aspects of dental prepaid programs. This included budgeting, conducting the corporate research and development efforts for clinical outcomes assessment and management research and the quality assurance programs for dental products. He currently serves on the American Dental Association's Code Revision Committee, the Standard Committee for Dental Informatics where he chairs the Dental Extension of the Continuity of Care Record and for Delta Dental's Dental Policy Committee. Dr. Anderson received his undergraduate education and DDS degree at the University of Nebraska. He attended the U.S. Navy's Nuclear Power School and received his graduate education at the University of Michigan, George Washington University and the University of Virginia, Darden. He has authored more than 45 scientific papers and abstracts on the subject of professional dental care and treating the primary diseases of dentistry as bacterial infections. He serves on numerous editorial and professional organization boards.
Wenyuan Shi, PhD
Chief Science Officer, Executive Vice President, and Chairman of Scientific Advisory Board
Dr. Shi is Chairman and Professor of Oral Biology at UCLA School of Dentistry and a Professor of Microbiology at UCLA School of Medicine. He leads a team of over 30 researchers using multidisciplinary approaches to study microbial pathogenesis with a specific focus on microbial biofilms, inter-species interaction and signal transduction. Dr. Shi's laboratories are actively involved in the development of next-generation diagnostic tools for microbial agents, including lateral flow and nanotechnology based real-time detection systems. Therapeutic applications of his technologies include the development of peptide-based targeted antimicrobials and a rationally screened herbal library. These translational research efforts have resulted in six licensed technologies by major pharmaceutical and dental companies and two start-up biotech companies. Dr. Shi obtained his BS degree from Fudan University in 1984 and his PhD degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1991. He completed his postdoctoral training at University of California-Berkeley during 1992-1995. He has authored or co-authored over 100 scientific articles and is inventor or co-inventor of 12 issued patents.
Erick Rabins
Chief Business Development Officer, Senior Vice President of Strategic Affairs
Mr. Rabins most recently served as Vice President of Allied Minds, an early-stage investment firm commercializing early-stage technologies from U.S. research institutions. Previously, he was the co-founder and President of Dentigenix Inc, a tissue engineering R&D company which was acquired by Ivoclar Vivadent, AG, a Liechtenstein-based international corporation. Mr. Rabins also held the position of Director of Business Operations from the early formation through the successful IPO of EDEN Bioscience Corporation and was Managing Director of Business Development at Onconome, Inc. Prior to his career as a life science entrepreneur, he spent 8 years as a risk management advisor to the high technology industry. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of several global health R&D institutions, life science trade associations and biotechnology companies. He holds a BS degree from the University of Wisconsin and a MS degree from Western Washington University.
Randal Eckert, PhD
Laboratory Director
Dr. Eckert leads the scientific discovery team at C3 Jian and manages the design and direction of the research pipeline. He is also the project leader for the anti-caries STAMP (specifically-targeted antimicrobial peptide) development group. Dr. Eckert pioneered the successful development of the first STAMP molecules while in the laboratory of Dr. Wenyuan Shi at University of California, Los Angeles and has evaluated their activities in vitro and in vivo. He has authored research publications and intellectually property filings relating to STAMP design and discovery. Dr. Eckert received his BS in microbiology from Washington State University in 2001 and obtained his PhD from UCLA in 2006 specializing in microbiology, immunology, and molecular genetics.
